Chapter 5

I worked on Chapter 5 for a while today. This one needs more polishing than I'd like. I've made notes and just need the comp time to sit and correct them. Tomorrow I'll be printing up 6 to prepare for proofing. I hope to get through to 7 over the weekend as time permits. Anyway, as I've posted before, I have no intention of lingering over this. My main goal with 5 is to make it read a bit faster. I don't want to keep Gail waiting any longer than I have to.

5 of 19 and MySpace

I'm moving on to proofing chapter five tonight. I've stared at 4 long enough. Call it a day already. :P On Friday Jay will have the day off, and I plan to proof no less than 3 chapters.

I've also started up a profile on It was Annalee Blysse's idea. She didn't know many other divas over there, so several of us joined up to link with her. We now have a kind of network happening, which is cool.

On another note... You know, I wonder if I'm the only one who is going insane wondering how the Amber Quill contest is coming along? I wish they sent out rejection mails as they went through the judging, so you'd at least know if you were still in the running.

Kids and Chapters

I proofed chapter 4/19 last night, so I'm one step closer. I need to make the changes on my comp though. I will do that this evening when hubby gets home from work. Then, I'm going to get started on reading my crit partner's chapters... I can't wait!

Ooh, my dad and I traded digi cams, so now I am photo savvy again. *g* There was nothing wrong with my brand spanking new 4 megapixel camera, that I'm still paying for!! But Win XP has this issue with USB ports--they are known to freeze up and stop working at the drop of a hat. Darn plug and play crapola. Microsoft needs to leave that bit of tech to Mac, at least until the learn to adapt it right. Sheesh! Anyway, I have this exact USB problem right now, but with so much writing stuff on my comp at the moment, I don't want to risk doing a by-pass in the event that I have to reinstall my OS. Sooooo.... dad and I made the trade. His cam doesn't have so great rez, it's held together with tape, and the back image viewer no longer lights up, but hey, it works on my comp! New cam for me, folks! For the past two days, I've taken tons of pictures...mostly ones of Rune--because he's only a baby and can't run away from his camera frenzied mommy. :P

Here he is after eating a bit of jarred ham and apples. So messy, but cute!

3 of 19

That's where I am on my final draft at this point. Oh, and I just printed up chpt 4 for review. As much as I hate to keep working on this thing, I'm ready to push it through. Good or bad. So far, all is okay. Whew!

The Grind

Well, I'm back in the editing saddle. I'm working on Chapter 3 today. It doesn't look like much needs fixing here, thank goodness. I'm ready to get this story out the door. I've already got a new Werewolves of Silver halfway completed, so I need to get Right of Discovery finished so I can get on with other things, devote my full attention elsewhere.

It's Madness, I Tell You

Just so I can remind myself what I'm up against, the following came directly from Romance Divas: (Regarding Amber Quill's Heat Wave 2006 Competition)

QUOTE(mariab @ Jan 16 2006, 10:05 AM)
Trace, how many submissions did you receive this year?

(Trace:)Hi Maria,

Just shy of 200 (it was something like 196 or 197....I forget, since some people sent the same manuscript twice.....I'll have to count again later today.) Anyway, of those, about 170 went directly to the judging pile, while the other ones got disqualified immediately. So it's a nice mini-mountain this year I'm glad I asked the judges to start early, knowing the last-minute rush would be big. I didn't, however, expect to receive 1/5th of all entries yesterday. Hahaha

Yikes! What have I gotten myself into?!

Amber Quill Entry

I did it! I made it in by the skin of my teeth. I finished my Amber Quill entry earlier today and emailed it. I tell ya, it feels like I just did NaNo! Whew!

That competition was just under two weeks of straight up, hardcore speed writing. No other way around it. I don't know how some of those ladies managed to do two or three entries. Insane! One was almost too much for me.

I wasn't quite so happy with my final chapter, but overall I'm very pleased with the story itself, which is the first installment of my Werewolves of Silver Series.

It would be nice if I did make it in the anthology, but if it doesn't get accepted for the Heat Wave, I'm sure someone will pick the story up elsewhere. Maybe this week I'll see if it would be cool if I put up my first chapter so I can get some feedback for it.

Finishing Touches

I'm adding the finishing touches to my Amber Quill entry. I wrote the final love scene today, now I'm making sure the reading flows, and the sections are properly divided into chapters. With any luck, this short will become the start of the werewolf series I've been toying around with for the past few months. If this one's sucessful, I'll go ahead and flesh out the other four I have planned. I hate to doom myself to crushing rejection, should my work not be accepted, but I have high hopes for this one. I just love the characters in these stories. That always makes a rejection sting more. Ah well. No pain, no gain. Salud!

Frozen Characters

Arg! I've got two characters that are frozen. You know, when you're writing, and you need to move the scene forward, but your characters seem like they're stuck in a tar pit and nothing seems to get them going again?

Looks like I'm going to have to get out the cattle prod on my hero and heroine. I cut a huge block of text yesterday, and it got them going for a paragraph or two, then back to the big freeze. Oh, for the love of... well, great googly-moogly! @#^%!! I put down the story for the night, hoping that this morning it would read better.

Half Way Point

Everything is at a halfway point for me at the moment. I am half way finished with my Amber Quill entry. I am going to have that finished and submitted by Friday.

After that, I'm going to take Saturday off, then I'm back to my WIP. I am preparing it to submit it. I am hoping it will be ready by the 23rd.

Meanwhile, I am struggling to get in 4 hours a week. Jay is never home, and the baby has hit the "extreme-cling" stage. I can sit with him on the floor with a ton of his toys, and every time, he'll crawl to me and climb into my lap. So the writing has to wait until later. What can I do?

At any rate, I'll be glad to see something, anything, completed at this point.
